As with other types of oral diseases it is important to practice preventative measures when it comes to gum disease. However, one key factor is that gum disease if left untreated can lead to more serious health problems. Gum disease can lead to other systemic diseases because if left untreated it can travel through your bloodstream to the rest of your body.
